Ashokan Edicts Junagadh |
About: |
Ashokan Rock edicts are situated at Lat. 210 31 N; Long 700 28 E. The Rock edicts of Emperor Ashokan were engraved on a granite boulder on the slope of Girinagara or Urjayata Hill. On the eastern face of it was engraved 14 Rock edicts by Ashoka and later epigraphs of Mahakshatrapa Rudradaman I and Skandagupta were also recorded on it, the Rock edict was first reported by James Todd in 1822. The other two epigraphs have a common purpose, which was recording the history of the breaking of dams of Sudarshan Lake occurring because of the turbulent storm waters of river Suvarna Sikta and Palasini rushing down the hill slopes. These edicts which are in Brahmi script provide history of this lake and breach of it followed by repairs, down from Mauryan to Gupta period.
Junagadh Ashokan Edicts are also known as Ashok Shilalekh. The other two epigraphs depict the breaking of the dams on the Sudarshan Lake that occurred because of a turbulent storm that led the waters of the Suvarna Sikta River and Palasini River rush down the slopes. The Ashokan Edicts in Junagadh are written in Brahmi script. The inscriptions of the rock date back to the 3rd century BC. These Ashokan edicts impart instructions of moral values and talk about Dharma, harmony, peace and tolerance. As you wind your way towards Girnar Hill you'll pass a small roadside building that houses the huge boulder on which King Ashoka had 14 edicts inscribed in Pali script. These edicts are moral lectures laid down by a deeply religious king who had embraced Buddhism after much war and bloodshed. The boulder has some Sanskrit inscrptions ordered by later kings. These mostly pertain to matters of the kingdom. With roots around 250 B.C, the Ashokan Edicts, Junagadh, fourteen in number, are extremely valuable assets of India's rich cultural past. The edicts of Ashoka have been scripted in Brahmi in Pali language and engraved into large granite stone give and spread the word of Ashoka's philosophy to the world and thereby convey and propagate the word of Buddha to the whole world.Located at the base of the Girinagara or Urjayata Hill, the boulder bearing the edicts of Ashoka placed within a small building at the side of the road established itself at 210 31 N and 700 28 E. The first fourteen edicts here are that of Ashoka and are etched in the eastern side of the boulder. Then later Mahakshatrapa Rudradaman I in 150 A.D and Skandagupta in 450 A.D incorporated their inscriptions describing the dire straits brought about by the destruction of the embankments of Sudarshan Lake by the rivers Suvarna Sikta and Palasini. Of all the monuments and Forts in Junagadh, the edicts of Ashoka carry the philosophy in its weightiest terms. |
